is it normal to take an upper level elective for your first year?

This fall will be my first year as a rising sophomore since I'm a transfer. My advisor told me to take an upper level elective for some reason so I picked ENES461 and she told me I didn't need any pre-reqs so I just signed up for the class solely based on her recommendation. Is it a good idea to start off with taking upper level courses?
