Why is "eigh" in names pronounced "ee" and not "ay"?

Neigh, sleigh, eight... all ay sounds. Every time I read an "eigh" name I pronounce it ay in my head lol.

So where did the ee come from? And how does everyone know to pronounce it that way? I feel like I'm losing my mind.
