My In-Depth Review of the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses as Everyday Wear

Discussion

Hello Everyone,

After using the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses extensively for over a month, I wanted to share a comprehensive review based on my daily experiences. As someone who wears prescription glasses regularly, I have a solid foundation for comparison. I own six pairs of glasses, including two Ray-Bans with Gen S Transitions lenses and one pair of polarized sunglasses. This variety has allowed me to assess the Meta glasses in different contexts.

🧠 Background

I have astigmatism and rely on glasses for vision correction. While I could opt for corrective surgery, I prefer the comfort and style that glasses provide. My daily rotation includes:

  • 2 pairs of Ray-Bans with Gen S Transitions lenses
  • 1 pair of polarized Ray-Ban sunglasses
  • 3 other pairs of prescription glasses

This diverse collection enables me to compare the Meta glasses with other eyewear options.

πŸ‘“ Comfort and Fit

The Meta glasses are slightly bulkier than my other pairs, but I haven't experienced discomfort. They are surprisingly lightweight, and I haven't noticed any strain on my ears or nose. However, some users have reported that the glasses can feel heavy after prolonged use, especially if worn solely as sunglasses without prescription lenses.

πŸ‘€ Aesthetic Appeal

The Meta glasses are designed to resemble classic Wayfarers, making them stylish and versatile. However, when equipped with clear lenses, they may appear more noticeable due to the integrated technology. To mitigate this, I opted for Transitions Xtractive Polarized lenses. These lenses darken quickly outdoors and remain clear indoors, offering a balance between functionality and aesthetics.

πŸ”‹ Battery Life

Battery performance has been a significant consideration:

  • Video Calls: Initiating a video call at 100% battery typically results in a 40–50% drop after 50 minutes of streaming.
  • Short Videos: A 1-minute video consumes approximately 2–3% of the battery.
  • Longer Videos: A 3-minute video can reduce the battery by 5–8%.
  • Photos: Taking 20 rapid-fire photos may decrease the battery by 2–4%.
  • Idle Time: With minimal usage, the glasses can last from 8 AM to 9 PM, ending with around 10% battery.

To conserve battery, I disabled the "Hey Meta" voice activation feature, which continuously listens for commands and drains power. Instead, I use the physical button on the temple to activate the assistant.

🎀 Microphone and Audio Quality

The Meta glasses are equipped with five microphones, but the placement of the primary microphone above the nose bridge can cause issues for individuals with larger noses, leading to muffled audio during calls. Meta has acknowledged this and released a software update that allows the glasses to utilize additional microphones for improved call quality. After enabling the "Microphone Adjustment" setting in the Meta View app, I noticed clearer audio during calls.

Regarding audio playback, the bone conduction speakers provide clear mids and vocals but lack robust bass. In noisy environments, I need to increase the volume to around 80% to hear audio clearly. While the sound quality is adequate for casual listening, it's not a replacement for dedicated headphones.
