[US] Multiple credit cards being mailed to my address by former tenant
I’ve lived at my current apartment going on two years. I’ve received different pieces of mail with different names on them and assumed they were former tenants and just wrote “return to sender” before sending them back (none of them were really urgent, mainly ads and flyers so it wasn’t a big deal)
A few months ago, a man showed up at my door explaining he’s the former tenant and accidentally mailed his car title to his old address. He claims to live out of state and flew to my state just to retrieve this title. I told him I was currently working and on a call so he wouldn’t expect me to go to the mail box with him and just asked for a forwarding address in case I received anything.
Since then, (I didn’t put two and two together) I started getting MORE mail with this guys’s name on it. Stupidly enough, I sent him a text when I received an envelope that felt like there was a credit card in it but was advised that this felt scammy or that he would keep asking me to forward his mail. So I returned the card to sender again. Thought this guy just wouldn’t activate the card or get it figured out with his bank.
Now, I’m getting SEVERAL pieces of mail with his name that feel like they have a credit card in them, multiple times a month from different credit card companies (like seriously, name a credit card company and I’ve probably gotten mail from them with a card in it). It’s been many months since that interaction and this guy has texted me multiple times asking me to get in touch with him. If this really is a situation of wrong address I have no problem forwarding his mail but I’m starting to feel like if this was truly an error on the former tenant’s part, he would’ve fixed his address the first or second time around.
TDLR: former tenant asking for mail forwarded but it has increased in frequency and I’m being mailed multiple credit card envelopes in his name
Is this a known scam? Any advice on who to report this to (USPS, apartment leasing office, etc)? Thanks in advance!
