Questioning ethics of adopting a cat

Advice

Hi all! My dad is looking into adopting two kitties, Layna and Churro. Layna's a fairly chill 1 year old, who seems perfect for the house. Churro is a very active 4 month old, has WILD zooming, and is generally a blast to be around. The kitties get alomg well, and would be great together.

He lives in the midwest with a couple doors that open to the outside. Theres a field nearby the house, and if a cat got lost in it they likely would never come back. I recently lost a kitty (who thankfully was found), so I'm considering that when helping him get ready for them. With how speedy and erratic Churro is, im not confident that he wouldnt dash out the door at some point.

I fully believe that my dad will be careful, but my mother is a fairly awful person, and while she absolutely wouldn't hurt or abuse the cats, I don't believe that she would be very careful when opening doors. I dont see Layna as a flight risk, but Churro is young enough that he may not know better.

At the end of the day its my dad's decision, but he wants my input and I'm truly not sure what their right decision here is. These are shelter cats, so i don't want to advise against rescuing one if I'm overreacting, but also don't want to put a cat at risk if its a real issue.
