Would collecting a complete base set be a good way to learn the game?

I know there are starter kits, and I want to get the battle academy box to get me started. But I would also like to collect a specific base set and use these to play with different deck builds with a friend. We don’t need or care for the expensive chase cards. Is this a fair approach to getting into the hobby for learning the game and learning how to use different types of decks?

How many extra energies and trainer/support cards would I need on top of the base set, to make two complete decks? Thanks.
