18 y/o in NYC thinking about quitting school to join Local 3 electrician union — what are my chances? Also, how should I kickstart my career this summer?
Hey everyone, I’m an 18-year-old full-time student-athlete in NYC (Bronx) currently attending college but seriously considering pursuing an electrician career through Local 3 union. I’ve heard the union spots are super competitive and usually people don’t get in until a bit older (2027 or so). I’m willing to quit school if a union apprenticeship opens up now or soon because I want to start building a solid career ASAP.
A couple questions: 1. How common is it for someone my age to get accepted into Local 3 apprenticeship? What are my chances? 2. What’s the best way to kickstart my electrician career this summer if I can’t get into the union right away? (Pre-apprenticeship programs? Entry-level jobs?) 3. Any tips on how to stand out or prepare so I’m ready when union applications open?
Thanks so much in advance for any advice. I’m hungry to learn and get my foot in the door.
