Learning About Somali Culture & Courtship Seeking Insight Somali Communication & Marriage Traditions
Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh. I'm sorry if this isn't allowed. I'm not Somali but seeing someone one who is and I want to learn more about Somali culture and gain some insight. I don't have any Somali friends or any of at my masjid.
I’ve been trying to learn more about Somali culture lately—especially around communication and courtship, relationships. I know everyone is different, but I’m curious: is it common for Somali men to not speak every single day if they’re really busy with work or business? Like, is that something that’s considered normal orrrrr am I being naive 😅? We have been seeing each other for a hot min and I'd think by now we would be atleast checking in daily. He has talked about marriage recently.
Also, I’d love to understand more about the courtship or marriage process in your culture. For example, in mine, it’s usually expected for both sets of parents to meet and give their blessing pretty early on. But I’ve seen people mention in a post in a different group that in Somali culture, families may not get involved until things are more official, like engagement—is that true? Just trying to understand better, especially if we’re blending different traditions.
