Car Died in Shop
Hi everyone. Location: Texas.
Several weeks ago I took my car into my regular shop because of a check engine light. They determined that a part they’d previously repaired broke, so they replaced it under warranty. But when they tested it, the new piece short-circuited some critical computer system in my car. The shop ordered a replacement computer system (they’re covering it since it was caused by the under-warranty piece), but the computer had to be built by the manufacturer and shipped. The shop expected it in a couple of weeks.
Now, maybe 6-8 weeks later and after some runaround, the shop is saying that the manufacturer is saying they don’t have the necessary parts to build the computer system, and that there is no expected completion date. My car is inoperable without this piece.
The shop said they’d get on eBay and aftermarket sites to try and find a compatible piece, but my gut’s saying I should be checking with a lawyer to understand my options. Would you agree? Should I be looking for a Consumer Rights attorney or someone else? Or am I SOL?
In case it’s relevant, my car’s resale value isn’t much, but I have a good $10k in repairs still under warranty (rebuilt transmission and a few other jobs).
Thank you for the advice.
