1.5 Diabetes? Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults?
Late last year (Oct-Nov?) I was diagnosed with latent autoimmune diabetes in adults or as my endocrinologist said diabetes 1.5. He said that I'm not type 1 but not quite type 2. Truth be told, it was a bit frustrating. My regular doctor, about 5 years ago, diagnosed me as prediabetic, then type 2 diabetic. He had me on metformin for almost 2 years, which I believe damaged my stomach because now I have gastroparesis, but that's another story.
After suffering, switching from pills to insulin, then back to pills with insulin, now I take Januvia 50mg, Semglee 80 units a night, and 15-25 units of Aspart before meals or "hidden" sugar snacks that might make my glucose spike. After a lot of back and forth and a letter of medical necessity and a prior authorization, my insurance finally approved me for a continuous glucose monitor and sensor, which has proven to be more hassle than a step in the right direction as I've already gone through 4 sensors of the freestyle libre 3 plus in the past week and a half.
Hopefully now I can push my primary care physician to either refer me to another endocrinologist, since mine recently retired or maybe to my local diabetes management clinic and the doctor there can order me an insulin pump because my abdomen is so sore from all the injections I give myself. I bruise and bleed so easily now almost every single injection I give myself, nowadays. It burns when I stab myself and burns even more when I inject the insulin. It's not cold, it's room temperature. I've also noticed some swelling in my feet and ankles, and after reading up on both Semglee and Aspart, they both have side effects of lower extremity swelling.
If anyone has any insight or would like to share their stories about their issues with LADA or 1.5 diabetes, please feel free to comment on my post
