Cross cultural relationship - need advice
Hi everyone. First time poster. I am a 30+ white female dating an 30+ American born indian male for one and a half years now. We’re so in love and so compatible and have been nothing but happy. He doesn’t engage in many cultural or religious practices in his daily life but says they’re important for him, so I’ve done the work and read a lot to learn, which is all he said he needed. His mom disapproves of me but we always thought she’d get over it.
Fast forward, and he blindsided me with a breakup. Says he realized much too late that maybe the missing element of our relationship is culture understanding. I don’t want to trash him, he is wonderful. And he came back quickly wanting to maybe try but not having answers.
Of course I want this, but I want us to be happy. So my question is - is it true that sometimes you have to be with someone who will just “get you?” That culture is an intangible that can’t be taught? That love maybe isn’t enough?I love him so much and I don’t want him to make the fear of losing me make him unhappy in the long term.
