Teaching my daughter (13F) the 1.5 bag life
After years of car vacations where the amount of luggage was not an issue, our family finally took a 5 day vacation on a plane and my daughter did great 1.5 bagging, and honestly she might be ready to 1.2!!
We knew going in that we would not do laundry on the trip, and it was a hot and sweaty beach destination so we all needed to pack some extra clothes JIC we got too sweaty during the day. She used a 35L rolling bag and 25L backpack.
Clotheswise she did great - only ended up with 2 “extra” t-shirts, but that’s because on the 2nd day her and her dad both got sunburned and I ended buying them some UPF overshirts and she wore that the rest of the trip instead of her t-shirts. (Kid’s sunburn was pretty minor as she was much better about listening to warnings to cycle into the shade and re-up her SPF. Dad was having too much fun.)
Her backpack was at least 50% occupied by her stuffed animal, so if she’s ready to travel without a stuffie next year she might be able take a smaller personal item.
I actually overpacked more than her - I brought jeans and hiking pants and didn’t wear either. I brought 2 books and only read 1. And I have dietary restrictions so I brought a bunch of meal bars JIC and I didn’t need them.
She did complain about not having legroom due to her personal item being so bulky - so that’s her motivation to go down to 1.2 for the next plane trip.
Super proud of her, she did great packing, had enough stuff to stay entertained and clothed the whole trip and only overpacked due to buying something new in the trip. Even her toiletries she did great packing.
