Solo Young Traveler in Italy

Hello,
I'm planning to travel in Italy around July-August in Italy for around 3-4 weeks, and was wondering what spots or a general Itinerary I should follow as a 24 y.o. male.

I was suggested up until now to try to go to hostels and meet up with people there, and then join them to wherever.
Any suggestions?
