I am back. I promised something coming for July, and I want to fulfill that. So let’s begin to present this plan of mine.

About the series:

Snow White with the Red Hair is a shoujo fantasy romance manga series created by Sorata Akiduki. It is serialized in the LaLa magazine (published by Hakusensha) since 2006, still running even today, which means this is an ongoing series. Still going strong even after 20 years, currently at the 27th volume, which is quite a good feat.

Meanwhile it received an anime version at exact ten years ago. It was made by a well known and experienced studio Bones, which they did many wonderful things. From structural viewpoint, the studio’s Team B was responsible, that same team which brought together things like Mob Psycho 100, Space Dandy, Eureka Seven or recently MHA Vigilantes. The series director was Masahiro Ando, who was also the director for Blast of Tempest or Hanasaku Iroha (who also worked on Evangelion too), while the screewriter is Deko Akao, whose name you might heard of on many other projects. Music composed by Michiru Ōshima, whose might be known for making the music for some live action Godzilla movies, Fullmetal Alchemist 2003, Tatami Galaxy, Bloom Into You, or Bucchigiri (for a recent example) and many more.

The series proper had two seasons. Season 1 aired in Summer 2015. Season 2 was continued where S1 left, which aired in Winter 2016. Between the two seasons, it received an OVA episode, which released shortly before the S2 premiere. It has 2x12 episodes overall, plus the OVA, so that is two cours and 25 episodes.

About the story synopsis:

Shirayuki is young woman born with red hair working as a pharmacist. Due to that strange hair color, she receives the attention of many. She cut her long hair, escaped from Tanbarun, her homeland, due to Raji, the prince ordered her to become his concubine. During the escape, a young man named Wisteria Clarines helped her, who is also happened to be a prince of a neighboring nation. After forging friendship, they relationship must endure against all odds.

Okay, okay, what other things I should know about it? And why did I picked that up?

1. It is a shoujo romance story with good and colorful cast of characters. Our protagonist is a redhead apothecarian, and the male lead is a crown prince, and the two fell in love each other. An also we have many other supporting charcaters who are also interesting and contributing to the plot.

2. It is well beloved. Well received when released, it is received positively even after many years. In discussions it is fairly mentioned or if this is the subject, but one thing is for sure, is that they say many good and nice things about it. Thanks to the production which was so well-made, plus the source is also decent. A piece of gem, which is not considered underrated. It is considered a really good shojo fantasy romance story, for a good reason.

3. The cast. It deserves to talk about. But hey, who do we have here? It is none other than the myth, the legend, the man herself, Hayami Saori. She is the voice of Shirayuki. And it is considered as one of her well-known and performances ever had in her career (Giji Harem is also a top contender though). No wonder this got discussed multiple times. She nailed that. Did I mentioned that she sang an OP and ED for it? But there is a big number of names in the lineup and they are representing a good quality. Dub bros should not have to complain either with what they have.

4. Representation of redheads (or gingers). People with red hair were always considered special (positive or negative) due to their unusual hair color. Shirayuki is no exception either. A hair color that is considered rare and unique, there many historical or currently living example for redheads. One might could consider them as a minority, which statement could be true. In manga/anime, there are many well-known and beloved redhead characters, even protagonists. But Shirayuki is also a proud one with a true red colored hair.

5. Hopium/copium. As I said earlier, Akagami no Shirayukihime is still an ongoing manga series, anime version is not a complete adaptation, lots of time happened since then, which means more source material got released. I know it is hopeless, but there some of them who hidden and scattered who still praying for new seasons even today.

6. It can be compared to many others. If you liked Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii, Akatsuki no Yona, Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent, Saiunkoku Monogatari, Arte or even Apothecary Diaries, then might you would love this as well. Why did I mentioned them? It is because some common things: strong female lead, a commoner girl who enters into a royal palace, and forming a relationship with a male who is part of a royalty, a world/setting that is heavily influenced by historical eras and regions, has comedy elements too. (Does using medicines/being redheads count as well?)

7. Anniversary reasons. According to my knowledge, nobody dared to pick this up for hosting, but as the tenth anniversary is coming closer, it is the right time to do it. Which means this is the first time.

8. Timing. Currently there are not many rewatches booked for July yet, especially which starts at that month that is.

Where can I watch that:

Crunchyroll and Hulu has both seasons. Meanwhile the OVA does not have any, so you have to find other ways.

Schedule:

Starting date would be the day when episode one aired back then. But I have two options because the original air time happened at midnight back then. (JST time zone we are talking about).

Plan A: Start is the seventh day of July. From July 7, it would go until the last day of July (July 31). On the 19th, we would watch the OVA episode. Final post on the first day of August (August 1).

Plan B: Starting one day earlier. On July 6. OVA will be at July 18. Final episode on July 30. At the last day of the month (July 31), the rewatch will be concluded with the overall discussions.

But one thing for sure: One episode per day pace. 22:00 CET/13:00 PST/16:00 EST is the chosen time.

Some other things to say:
