Worm Chase headstart

Guide / Tip

So I discovered something about sandworms that is implied and I'm sure people have talked about, but I couldn't find this. So I'm posting this here.

If you're crossing the desert and a worm catches you, it surfaces first before it starts to chase you. This animation is about 15 seconds long (17 technically, but might as well round down for safety). That's 15 seconds where you can get your butt to ground. We know this technique thanks to the community, but I think something else needs to be said. Not only is that 15 seconds you're not disturbed; it's also lot of distance you can cover. With the mk1 and mk2 sandbike, that's about 300m you can cross in the time before the worm grabs you. This window becomes wider if you use a boost strategically. By boosting to get up to speed, then boosting up hills, plus a final boost using all my heat when the worm surfaces; I can make this window 500-600m on a good day with a mk2 bike. I like to use map markers so I know which way to drive towards and let me estimate how much distance I have left before I get eaten.

The only exception to this that I have seen is drum sand; worms won't care and will attack you outright. I have not tried this with thumpers but from what I've seen, it won't work since they'll jump up and snatch up the thumper as soon as they want to. Other than that, worms in the open desert will give you a ~300m headstart that you can take advantage of. You'll find that water management is more challenging than the worms itself.

Bless the Maker and His water. Stay thirsty, my friends. (that catchphrase has a new meaning with this game)
