Will be a first time cat owner in a month, anxious and need tips
Hello, I’ve been a lil nervous and constantly looking things up online about what to do and not to do and what to buy and not to buy, and it’s a lil overwhelming. I just have a few questions and need some tips on what I should or shouldn’t do in the situation I’m in to take care of an 8-9 week old kitten:
The main issue that I’m worried about more than anything else is where I’m at when I get the kitten and where I will be in the future. I’m guessing I’ll get the kitten in the middle of July and I’m currently at a family members house over summer. I’m going back to my regular house at the end of August. This is something I need the most help with as I don’t know if it’s better for me to acquire the kitten later, or get it as soon as it’s 8-9 weeks old, keep it in my room and take care of it properly obviously until it’s time for me to go home and take care of it there permanently. With this, I’m also wondering if keeping it in only my room isn’t a good idea because I’m worried of it roaming around, but I’m also worried that confining it to my room will affect it negatively. So, a lil help in that would ease my stress greatly.
For lease issues, I’ve seen multiple things online about how this type of treat is horrible and that type of dry food I awful and you need to switch up its food choices or else it’ll get picky. So, all I’m asking here is what type of treats are actually good, is it even worth it to buy dry food, and when people say to switch up its food, do they mean the company on the label or actual different types of wet food?
Another part I’ve been mostly confused on is the litter. What are the benefits to wood litter and the other kind? I see so much discourse about which is superior and it’s making me very indecisive. Also, to add onto the earlier point of keeping it in my room, if it was okay to keep it in my room, would the cat even want to be around the litter box? I’m planning on getting a stainless steel one and scooping it everyday so the smell isn’t what I’m worried about, I worried about the proximity of the box to its food and water, and just to the cat in general. If I can’t keep it only in my room, then letting it out in the hallway and such isn’t that much of a big deal.
Lastly, veterinarian needs. Like I said before, I’m temporarily at a family members house for a couple months and I don’t really know how the vet visits will work. I see some people online saying that you should research and get a specific vet that you go to all the time. If this is something that the vets can sort out when we actually go to them, just tell me and I’ll worry about that later.
Any help on these topics will be much appreciated. I might be overthinking this, and this post might js be a lil anxious/stressed phase that is probably making the actual experience of taking care of a cat seem scarier than it is, but still I want to be prepared so I’m not doing an awful job at taking care of cat. Also, if my situation doesn’t seem like it would be the best to take care of a cat, then tell me and I won’t get it until I’m truly ready in the future.
Also also, if it matters, he’s ginger.
