“Mom, Christopher and I split up”
I was really proud of Emily’s response after this line. As much as “Really? That’s great, you don’t have to say anything, now or ever?” was a little invalidating to Emily, I really appreciated that Emily being like, ‘okay, anyway’ was more serving to Lorelai than herself because even though I thought Emily deserved just a tiny bit of input or space to insert herself, she knew she wouldn’t be able to avoid going overboard, so it was nice that she just supported her daughter’s mental well-being. Not gonna lie, I would’ve had a question or two in Emily’s position, who knows her daughter and the father of her granddaughter very well, but she zipped her lips and catered carefully. Not common for Emily, but very much needed. It shows her growth and need to focus on her own situations instead of hyper focusing on her societal standards. She even allocated a victory story she knew of where the woman of a divorce came out on top. Of course she interpreted it in her own experiences, but she meant it in a way that her daughter would thrive instead of being destroyed based on a man’s acceptance. Very progressive for Emily, IMP.
