My mom cursed me because I want to travel alone. Will her “baddua” (curse) come true?

Advice/Help 🥺

I’m a 20-year-old woman turning 21 soon. I recently got into a huge argument with my to meet my dads side of the family whom I haven’t met in 16 years and the someday — for work, for fun, whatever. Her response? She started shouting “You’re never allowed to travel alone, not even at 25 or 26. Someone will always travel with you until you get married. Then your husband can take that responsibility.”

I asked her why I can’t travel alone, and she just got furious. She told me, “Don’t open my ears with your nonsense, don’t disturb my peace of mind. Why do you need to go alone anyway?”

I told her: “Everyone has their own life. If something is wrong, I won’t do it — but there is nothing wrong with a woman traveling alone. Not even in Islam. If your peace of mind is destroyed just because I want to live independently, that’s not really my problem.”

I said I’ll listen when she says something fair and reasonable, but I won’t follow something blindly that has no logic or religious basis.

And that’s when she hit me with it: “May Allah never let you succeed. May you always fail. May you be ruined.”

I was just… stunned. She literally gave me a baddua just because I said I won’t follow something I don’t believe is right.

My question is: Will that baddua go through? Like, genuinely — I know parents’ duas are powerful in Islam, but what about curses when they’re angry and unjustified? Because this isn’t the first time she’s been emotionally or verbally abusive. There’s a long history of control, manipulation, and saying horrible things when she can’t control me. I love her, but this constant need to own me, not raise me, is killing me inside.

Islamically, does a baddua like that even count when all I’ve asked for is independence — not rebellion, not sin — just my own right to choose?

I should also mention that we’ve lived in Pakistan our entire lives and just shifted to USA 4 months ago.
