Dear Worldbuilding Veterans: How Do You Keep Your Worlds from Falling Apart?
Hello everyone!
I'm Vix, and I've been immersed in worldbuilding for some time now—writing lore, shaping factions, mapping timelines, building characters—but I’ve reached a point where I feel the need for better structure to handle the growing complexity of my work.
By nature, I’m more of an analog worldbuilder. I write in scattered notebooks, sticky notes, and loose sheets of paper until the pile becomes too unwieldy—then I sift through the chaos, organize it, and eventually scan or transcribe the most essential pieces into PDF files on my PC. It’s a system I’ve grown used to, but I know it could be more refined.
Recently, I’ve started experimenting with Obsidian, and so far I like it far more than other free tools I’ve tried. The ability to link thoughts and topics helps me start building a web out of what used to be a pile of fragments.
That said, I would truly appreciate hearing from those with more experience:
To my superiors in worldbuilding, those with talent far greater than my own, I simply and humbly ask for your guidance.
Are there any templates, checklists, workflows, or systems you’ve found helpful—especially in the earlier stages of your worldbuilding journey?
I’m looking for anything that helped bring clarity and rhythm to your process—spreadsheets, culture builders, faction templates, timelines, character organizers, anything really. I’d love something structured that I can use as a temporary scaffold while I refine or develop my own long-term method.
I’m also curious what tools or platforms worked best for you—digital or analog. I still love the tactile feeling of notebooks and sketchpads, but I’m open to learning how others bridge analog and digital workflows more efficiently.
Thank you in advance for your time, wisdom, and any recommendations you can share. I deeply appreciate the generosity of this community.
Warm regards,
Vix
