Macbook Pro 14 vs 16 - My take

Discussion

Ive spent so much time and energy the last few months trying to decide which to buy. I decided to buy the 16 inch, and wanted to share the condensed list of reasons why I made this decision to maybe help someone else out.

Note: If you have a budget then let your budget decide, either will work fine. I did not factor in price since im looking for the best laptop for my use case, and I plan to keep it for many years, so over its lifespan the price difference is not that much more, so I chose to not let price dictate my choice since im usually a frugal person and if I do factor in price I will just pick the cheaper option.

Ok here is my three main reasons why I believe the 16 inch is a better choice for me:

  1. The 16 is better for productivity work while sitting in one place for long sessions (whether at a desk or on my lap). The larger screen makes working much easier and enjoyable. The larger trackpad and wrist area make for a more comfortable typing experience. My wrist get to rest on the laptop itself. On the 14 my wrist hang of the edge of the laptop and create an uncomfortable typing experience. And when using on my lap, I find the 16 is easier to balance and keep on my legs. Sometimes with the 14 I need to keep my legs together more than I'de like to.

  2. The 14 is in theory more portable while transporting. But if its in my backpack or the laptop lid is closed, for me the difference is negligible, so not a deciding factor.

  3. The only two scenario where the 14's size shines, is when you need to move it around while the laptop lid is open, and when using a super tiny desk. My workflow does not require this. In most cases I always close the laptop screen before moving it around. And I havent ran into a desk small enough for the size to matter. I think this only really matters if you are in college and you have to use your laptop and take notes in a notebook on one of those tiny lecture room desks. I dont require this type of mobility so its low on my list of priorities.

Taking this into account, I prefer to have a laptop that will maximize output while I am using it for productivity tasks, rather than for it to be easier to carry around with the lid open. I will just close the lid and move around. And in the rare cases when I need to move while keeping the lid open, its still very doable. Its not a HUGE laptop. Its just not small.

Thanks for reading, and would love to hear your thoughts on this matter! Thanks.
