Scooter for day trips outside of san francisco

I'm trying to avoid buying a car for as long as possible while living in SF. I have a little bit of fomo of not being able to explore (ie hike, dine, or generally experience) life outside of the city. Places like Santa Cruz mountains, Marin/Sonoma counties, Pacifica. These are excursions that I typically have to rent a car, ask a friend who has a car, or bicycle (somewhat limited by ability and time).

I've been throwing around the idea of getting my M1 and buying a 150cc scooter. Most posts I see about scooters are for getting around the city itself. Does anyone have any tips / words of caution for me for leaving the city? I'm not looking to drive on the highway or go at highway speeds - I think I'd be happy going on quieter side roads at lower mph. I'm just trying to expand my reach outside of SF.
