Please advise

My friend 22 YO came to usa legally as derivative asylee in 2016. His mom became US citizen in 2019. In 2021 he found a job that he still working to present. In 2022 he applied for i485 and he got a response that say his mom became US citizen before he adjusted to LPR and that he first need to file as principal asylee first . He is living with a US citizen gf since 2021 . They have been dating since 2018. they want to get married at some point . Financially he take care of 90 percent of monthly expense since her income is not enough. He is not sure if he is out of status at this point and how it affect if they apply for i130 and i485. Also would her not having enough income affect the process eventhough though he is financially independent. Any information is much appreciated .
