Toddler barely talk

My toddler is 18 months old he doesn’t say mama or baba he knows how to count to 6 and recognize some of the alphabet he tries to read it when he sees something written. He pulls me when he wants something pulls me when he wants to play. Makes me follow him if he wanted something he says random things but he doesn’t know how to communicate through words. I try to make him say mama every day but it never works is it normal?
