Got guilt-tripped into giving up my seat on the Mumbai Metro
This morning I was commuting from Ghatkopar to WEH (Western Express Highway) as usual. The metro was packed, and I was around the 3rd or 4th person in line to board — managed to grab a seat.
A little while later, a woman traveling with what seemed like 8–10 family members tapped my bag. I was watching a show, so I paused and looked at her. She asked me to give up my seat for her child because it was crowded. I told her no — if it was too packed, maybe they should’ve waited for the next metro.
She tapped me again and said her child had gotten an injection and couldn’t stand. Again, I said I was in line like everyone else and didn’t get a seat to give it up.
Eventually, I gave in — mainly because her entire group started giving me the death stare, and I didn’t want a scene. Felt like I was being judged for not immediately complying, even though I don’t think I was wrong.
Just needed to vent. Curious — what would you have done?
