Is it wrong for my best friend to keep hanging out with someone who hurt me?
A few weeks ago, I (20 F) went on a date with a guy(20 F). I actually met him through my best friend. She’s known him for less than a year — they’d only hung out a handful of times and stayed in touch here and there. The first time we all hung out, it was me, her, another friend and him. After that, he asked for my number and we started talking more. He was really sweet, said all the right things, and honestly made me feel really special. Eventually, he asked me out on a date.
The date was amazing — it was my first ever, so everything felt new and special. He brought me flowers, chocolates, and even a pretty necklace. I genuinely didn’t want it to end because I had such a great time. Here I was thinking this guy is perfect and that something real could come out of this. But not long after, he completely switched up. He started taking a long time to respond to messages and didn’t show much interest. I later found out through my best friend that he had told her it was just a “one-time thing” and there wouldn’t be a second date. And the worst part is, I don’t think he was ever planning on telling me any of this — which makes me feel like a complete clown, because eventually, I probably would’ve brought up a second date, completely unaware of what was really going on. That alone was hurtful, but what made things worse was realizing he already had another girl in his life. They were not together while we were on a date, but he definitely wanted to get married to her and his parents were apparently getting serious about her just a couple of days after our date. It’s crazy because if that was his plan all along, why go out with me in the first place?
After hearing that, I was devastated. I even cried in front of him. He did apologize, but it felt empty — like he was only apologizing because he got caught, not because he actually felt bad.
Then he lied to my face. He told me that he heard from my best friend that I thought the date was just “meh,” when I had literally told her that I had a really good time. I know she never said anything like that — and when she confronted him, he denied it. Later, she brushed it off and said he probably lied just to “save himself,” and that she understands him. That honestly made me feel even more alone.
Now here’s the thing: she is definitely going to hangout with him, because they have a mutual friend and and she said that when that person comes back she’ll probably hangout with him again. I told her she’s free to make her own choices — I’m not going to force anyone to stop talking to someone. But deep down, it hurts.
She says she doesn’t want our friendship to be ruined over a guy, but I can’t help but feel that this is already creating a distance between us. I’ve known her for more than 10 years but I can’t confide in her like I used to, and things are not the same.
Am I being too emotional here? Or is it fair to expect a close friend to distance herself from someone who hurt me so badly?
Would love to hear what others think.
