Should I move?
Graduate QS here. Just over 1 year experience in my current position. Working in a small consultancy, very chilled out, learned a lot in terms of contracts and law at my current company. I have a very good relationship with everyone and work is very flexible with working from home when needed.
My problem is that I don’t think I’m getting the technical experience that I would elsewhere. Although I’m fairly confident with how a contract is administered and how the HGCRA works. I literally haven’t learned any “proper QS” stuff. For example I haven’t done a take off, produced a BoQ, priced anything, used software like bluebeam.
All I’ve really done is deal with variations, produce applications for payment and help in writing dispute and claim letters/back ups.
This is something that’s been on my mind since I started working at my company. Over a year later, nothing has changed. The one thing making it hard to jump ship is my relationship with everyone and how willing they are to help me improve. It’s not their fault that the work we currently have on is not what I want to be doing. Compared to my friends who have about the same amount of experience as me (if not more) I have a lot more contractual knowledge than them, so i have benefitted from my current place. Just don’t know whether it’s the right time to make a move…
