I(f35) and my ex(m35) recently reconnected and I feel he is prioritizing hypothetical plans over what is essentially our anniversary

TLDR: ex ‘M35’ and I ‘F35’ reconnected and I feel he is prioritizing hypothetical July 4th weekend plans which have not been discussed or even mentioned in his friends group, over a day that is essentially our first anniversary and is being mentioned and brought up presently.

I ‘F35’ and my ex ‘M35’ recently reconnected over Memorial Day weekend after breaking up in April. We’ve been together almost a year. We went on a vacation which was supposed to be kind of like our closure but things didn’t end there and we’re still very much in each other’s lives and essentially dating again. We’re cautiously spending a lot of time together and we’ve been trying to communicate more openly and both be more flexible this time around.

July 5th will mark exactly one year since we went on our first date and had our first kiss. We don’t have a day we “made it official” we just kind of flowed into a relationship. Neither of us was looking for a relationship when we started dating but we were very compatible and developed strong feelings for each other. For all intents and purposes, July 5th is our anniversary. It’s a meaningful date to me, not something I expected a big celebration for, but still something I thought we might acknowledge or spend time together since it is a significant milestone. No t only am I his longest relationship, he is my first relationship after a traumatic divorce. He was an essential part of my healing from my divorce. While asking about a soccer game that will be on July 5th, I asked him if his friend who has season passes with him will be in town. He said “I don’t know” and as a lighthearted moment, I asked him, “Will you be in town on July 5th?” I was kind of expecting a warm or reassuring response, something like “of course,” or at least curiosity about why I asked.

Instead, he said, “I don’t know.” After about an hour of him prodding me to share why that bothered me, I told him that his answer stung a little. He explained that he usually goes away over July 4th weekend with friends, but here’s the thing: he hadn’t even spoken to his friends about any plans yet. There was no discussion, no event being floated. He just assumed something might come up because it has in the past, and was keeping the weekend open for that just in case.

He suggested we could hang out on July 7 instead. Then he said: “Can we just make it over two days so this won’t be a problem every year?”

That comment really stuck with me. It felt like he was already treating my emotional investment in that date as a burden or inconvenience even though he had zero actual plans and was just hypothetically saving the date for possible friend hangouts that hadn’t even been mentioned yet.

What hurt most was that he was essentially preemptively saying “no” to spending a meaningful day with me, in favor of possible but not confirmed nor “in the works” social plans. It made me feel like he was emotionally hedging or keeping me as a lower priority, even when there wasn’t a real conflict.

I’m wondering what others’ perspectives. Thanks in advance
