Are Japanese patient with foreigners who are trying to follow the culture

Like are foreigners expected to know everything right off the bat? Or would it be expected for foreigners not know everything for example drinking culture . I've never spoken to someone who wasn't born in my country so I'm not sure about expectations of such things
