Does anyone else feel bad when a reader wants the story to go in a different direction from the one you planned?
You ever get a comment like "I hope XYZ happens/doesn't happen!" and suddenly feel a strange obligation to completely alter the course of your story because you don't want to make people upset? Or am I just a spineless coward? While I know they probably don't intend it as a "This better not happen, or else!" I still can't help but feel bad that they probably aren't going to like where things are going. Happens a lot on my darker stuff, especially anything featuring unhealthy relationships. Like, if I'm writing about one character stalking another, there's always someone who comments something along the lines of "I hope the stalker gets caught/learns the error of their ways!" and I'm just sitting there like, "...I was actually gonna have the stalker emotionally manipulate their victim to get everything they wanted in the end, but now I'm having second thoughts." Like, I know that isn't a GOOD ending, but it's how I wanted it to go, you know?
