In a pinch the AGM-48 works against AI aircraft! Just have to line them up.
I love flying the Compass, but it's usually oops all AGM-48s with three IRM-S1s. One time I took off just to find that most convoy assets had already been blown up, instead the skies were swarming with Tarantulas, Crickets and Compasses (and even a Darkreach).
Instead of using the IR missiles, I decided to do a little experiment. For the Tarantulas, Crickets and Darkreaches, line up your plane either directly behind (ideally within 3km) or directly ahead (get within 2km, dangerous but we're desperate to rank up), get the enemy as close to the middle of the HUD as you can and fire! These guys can't really turn on a dime, and ECM pods and flares don't work on optical missiles. The AI freaks out and doesn't really try to evade, though I feel this could be patched out.
For actual fighter jets it gets tough, as they tend to turn and evade when you get close, but it's still doable. Line up directly ahead or (ideally) behind, watch out for IR missiles and AGMs away! But you're in a Compass so you're already at a disadvantage, so I usually just slither away instead of attacking these smaller jets.
Have fun! It's really satisfying to see smaller craft get atomized once the AGMs hit, instead of burning up with an IR missile. Tarantulas are real tough, AGMs track them real easy but you'll need two AGM-48s minimum to down them. Also managed to down a Darkreach with two Lynchpins :) but that's more luck than skill TBH.
