Too old to fly?

My husband 33(M) wants to pursue flight training. He's already completed a large portion of the written/online course, but today his parents (my in laws) came to me and said they dont think he will ever become a pilot, that he's way too old, and because he only has a 2 year degree he's going to waste all that money just to not get hired by a major airline (so supportive I know) They said their friend who is a 55 year old air traffic controller told them this. Is this true?
