Can you prepare for the B2 exam all by yourself? Need honest answers :)

Hello! I am just starting to learn German because I plan to go there for my master's. I have two more years before I go there. I just wanted wanted to know if books/ free resources are reliable to pass the B2 exam, or do I need to stop wasting my time on free and independent study and just get into a language learning school/ online course?
