I’m competing in a pageant. Is it worth it?
Hi everyone,
I’m reaching out specifically to women on this subreddit who have competed in pageants before or are familiar with the system. I’ve always dreamed of participating in one. Growing up, I watched friends take part and felt so inspired by them. For years, I expressed my desire to join—but unfortunately, I was often laughed at or dismissed. Friends, family, and even people I trusted would tell me I wasn’t pretty enough, that I’d embarrass myself, and that I simply didn’t have what it takes.
After working my way through college and graduating last year, I finally took the leap and applied. I was selected as a finalist in my pageant system, and I’m incredibly excited—but also overwhelmed. I’m completely new to this world, with about two months to prepare. I’ve been walking in my heels daily and have already begun coaching sessions to improve my stage presence and interview skills.
However, when I shared the news with some friends and family, their reaction crushed me. They told me I’d be a joke, that I wasn’t tall enough (I’m 5’5”), and that pageants only reward model-like girls—those who are 5’7” or taller, ultra-toned, and conventionally beautiful. Some even said that pageants don’t care about interview or personality anymore—just how you look on stage.
To make matters harder, I recently looked up past top finalists in my system. Many are professional models, have been competing since they were young, or have large social media platforms. Most wore custom gowns, which I can’t afford. I’ve been working out and have lost 10 lbs so far (with a few more to go), but I’d be lying if I said I haven’t cried myself to sleep wondering: Do I even have a real shot of placing at all? Will I just blow my budget to spend a couple minutes on stage as a laughing stock?
I want to ask:
To those of you who have competed—especially without years of experience, model height, or a big budget—what advice would you give someone like me? How important is all that realistically- should I just give up and pull out of the competition? I would appreciate honesty and feedback
