So much happened in these 4 episodes, all the injustices made my blood boil with frustration. Let's rant about it together!
Umbrella Corp is on a roll
Our team of inspectors just started noticing cracks in Wan Hai's case and got closer to the truth when Umbrella Corp decided to strike back and wipe out all opposition.
Me before VS after watching episodes 5-7
The tactics the bad guys use are truly despicable. They don't shy away from murder, kidnapping, targeting family members, planting evidence, threatening lawyers and the list goes on and on...
What surprised me the most was how well-coordinated their organization appears to be. It really seems like they’ve done all this many times before. I also found it interesting that they use industrial sites, like a garbage recycling facility, for kidnappings. That suggests the Umbrella Corp isn’t just involved in law enforcement and the legal system, but they’ve got connections in industry too.
How often does a food delivery drop off 3 million RMB at your door?
But the biggest bombshell drops when Qiao’s confession video leaks online even before the police can get their hands on the phone. Apparently, the video was uploaded from a virtual IP address, which makes it impossible to track its source.
Li’s reaction here feels like a meta commentary on how common AI face-swapping has become in Cdramas:
Li Renjun, that was my first thought as well !!
Given everything that has happened, it’s hard to imagine who the real mastermind could be. None of the three thugs interrogated by the special team seem clever enough to come up with a plan like this.
In fact, they all completely fell apart when asked random questions and couldn’t even keep their stories straight. It was obvious they were just reading from a script someone else gave them. But who could that be? (hint hint: it's not the director)
Wan Hai (Left), Chen Youcai (Center), Wang Yu (Right)
In conclusion,
Like my co-host Jacket said, all these mafia umbrella people need to go to jail !!! 😡😡😡
We don’t know who the mastermind is yet, but watching the Umbrella Corp in action could give us some clues about its possible members.
New faces on the sus list
The first one isn’t actually a new face, but I think we ruled him out too soon. Sun Fei was giving off major villain vibes hovering over poor Zhou Biao who had just been kidnapped and tortured. Strangely enough, no one at the police station seems to notice the very obvious bandage on his wrist.
Sun Fei is definitely one of the most suspicious characters right now, and even though appearances can be deceiving, this scene made me think he's more likely to turn out corrupt after all.
My second suspect is police captain Jiang Hongjun. At the start of episode 4, we see someone sneak into the lab and pour out the samples of river water. I turned the brightness up to the max in this scene and I’m almost certain it’s him tampering with the vials.
The shape of ears and the haircut gave you away!
Another worrying sign is how quickly he interrupts and takes over the interrogation exactly when the suspect who picked up Qiao's phone starts to visibly struggle with the questions. To me, Captain Jiang seems all but confirmed as one of the Umbrellas right now!
Probably the most surprising new suspect who came up only in the last minutes of episode 7 is Li Renjun’s wife, who was revealed to have some kind of business relationship with Wan Hong, the younger brother of Wan Hai. At this point, it feels like every family member is either bound to be targeted by the gang or ends up having some dealings with them XD
This lady is quite something, ain't she?
Also, I think there might be more to Wan Hong than we have been lead to believe. Maybe he had something to gain from his brother’s downfall? Chen Youcai told the special team earlier that they were childhood friends and claimed Wan Hong had nothing to do with his brother’s crimes. So far, he seems like the most capable one in the Wan family... which isn't saying much, to be honest XD
Li and Hong playing mind games
Finally, we get back to our protagonist who has mostly taken a back seat in these episodes... Maybe he took his mission of observing (观察观察) a bit too literally :D
Hopefully he’ll prove himself as a competent internal investigator soon, because right now we really need someone to take down all these Umbrellas!!
I really enjoyed the mind games between him and Li Renjun on the phone. They’ve got this big-little brother dynamic that makes their interactions so interesting!
From Hong’s perspective, it was definitely suspicious how quickly everyone knew he went to Qiao’s home to offer condolences. But as Li Renjun later explained, he publicly scolded Hong to "protect" him from getting in trouble for not reporting his visit to the higher-ups.
So... going to a dinner at Li’s place is fine, but visiting a grieving family is seen as a problem. Talk about double standards huh ?
Also, if this is how Li Renjun protects people, he wouldn’t make a good Umbrella, just saying XD
Bonus question: so many stairs!
There’s something about how the hotel staircase is shown that reminded me of the stairs we see in the opening titles.
Do you think that parallel is intentional? Any guess what the stairs might symbolize?
Discussion Questions:
- Just how angry all this organized crime and lawlessness made you feel?
- Any acting performances you'd like to give a shout-out to?
- What did you think of the mind games between Li and Hong?
- Why do you think Qiao needed to borrow a whopping 200,000 RMB from Li Renjun?
- How did Xu Yanwu know that Hong went to Qiao's place? How many people do you think are spying on Hong right now?
- Now that we know Qiao was murdered, do you think the other half of the anonymous letter accusing Li of being the "umbrella" is also true?
