The Princess’s Gambit: Episode 6 Discussion
Are your moral standards feeling unusually flexible today? Excellent. You’re in the right place. This is a sanctuary for sorting through your feelings about gorgeous people doing dubious things.
You know you’ve been around long enough when you understand this means he’s anything but thrilled.

I can keep up with the VIP schedule provided I write the discussions with minimal commentary and just light recaps. However, I also want to acknowledge that Viki only released episodes 1-2 today while most of us have already watched 7 and 8. While I mull over whether to follow Tencent’s calendar, I’ve decided to go ahead and post only about episode 6 today. Please comment below if you have any objections or requests.
Memos
Prince Wugou tells Shen Zaiye he’ll be taking in Qingying so his madams can educate her after she fell for the setup and attacked him.
This prince is salty like those 99-cent crackers.
Eunuch Wen arrives with a pile of gifts and a heartfelt smile, casually name-dropping the emperor and Consort Lan to soothe the royal snowflake’s tantrum. The diplomatic eunuch also mentions Consort Lan’s fondness for Qingying’s amicable wittiness.
Oh noes! I didn’t throw it, gravity did.
By the gates of the Shen residence, Jiang Taohua, Qingtai, Yuetao, and one of Prince Wugou’s aides get into a scuffle over the Sunlight Over a Thousand Peaks painting. Taohua spots her husband approaching so she drops the painting onto the brazier. It turns to ash right before their eyes.
Taohua’s look of defiance. She knows she has made her bed.
In the privacy of their home, Shen Zaiye strangles Princess Chengping. She tells him she’s his only hope of ever finding out what the painting depicted. She boasts an impeccable memory and the skills to replicate it with absolute precision.
Shen Zaiye temporarily unclenches to test Lady Jiang’s skills. She goes full art school flex and proves she’s not bluffing. She then attempts to negotiate, saying she’ll reproduce the painting in three parts but only if he agrees to meet her three demands. He responds with threats all neatly wrapped in hypothetical scenarios and leaves her like a candle guttering in the wind.
She held the line despite being greatly intimidated deep inside.
Effort was made on my end. Symmetry was not achieved.
Of course, the night wasn’t allowed to end without a marital check-in, just enough time for husband and wife to talk about the elephant in the room without ever saying “elephant.” Shen Zaiye recognizes that Meng Zhenzhen’s betrayal was the result of family pressure. She requests repudiation. He tears up the document and declares that she’s sick, not leaving, and definitely not managing the residence.
After the chancellor exits, Yuetao brings her lady a box containing twin bangles. What a husband of the year Shen Zaiye is! He strangles Taohua on their wedding night, then serves a FAFO notice on Zhenzhen’s birthday, right after holding his wedding on her birthday.
The latest grammar police to grace our screens.
She literally threw him a couple of bones.
On his way out, Prince Wuxia finds Xiang Qingying eating BBQ leftovers while crying. As usual, he offers his version of compassion and empathy by talking about the time he tried eating congee that was watery and rough. While I’m not particularly fond of them, it looks like both these youths share a fierce protectiveness towards those they perceive as disadvantaged.
We cut to Shen Zaiye and the emperor having what starts as a board game day and ends up as a congee test. I tried to put myself in Shen Zaiye’s shoes: if he refused the congee, would that have ruffled His Majesty’s feathers? You’re not really supposed to say no to what the emperor offers, right? Anyway, the emperor reminds him that inflation is getting worse and the people are suffering. Zaiye asks for an extension on managing the case before it’s handed over to the heir apparent.
Dimple alert! I repeat, dimple alert!
Qingtai didn’t come home from her investigation gig one day, which made Taohua suspect she was being held somewhere. She seeks Zaiye’s help in finding Qingtai by offering to produce the entire painting at once. He pretends he doesn’t need it.
Taohua then asks Qingying if she recognizes the seal. The younger woman says it belongs to Jinyin Gambling House.
Disguising herself as one of the attendants, Taohua infiltrates the gambling den. She catches sight of a star player who’s on a winning streak. As she gets near him, she gets a whiff of Boshan incense and concludes it’s her own husband.
After cashing in his chips, Zaiye figures out that the counterfeit money is circulated primarily through the gamblers. He spies on some dudes opening the treasury and notices it needs a special jade pendant to unlock.
As he makes his way out, Taohua surprises him.
Miscellaneous
I know that some people find it jarring that I do these discussions with an attempt at fast food humor on an otherwise serious drama. The good news is that the tone is yours to choose as you express your drama reactions in the comment section.
I’ve repeatedly played this clip of Liu Xueyi’s fake beer belly. Please enjoy.
