Are two start-ups a recipe for disaster?

Hey there, I've been doing some research but I'm currently residing in Nova Scotia, Canada, and I'm feeling a bit lost with some of the other discussions here!

My spouse works as a photographer and I work as a wedding and event planner/decorator. We've been thinking about starting our own business that offers a mix of services. I have a diploma in Fine Art with a focus on graphic design, which I enjoy doing on the side. Recently, I got accepted into a guild for artisans, which gives me the opportunity to participate in craft expos and shows to showcase and sell my artwork.

So now, I'm looking at managing two startups. The art business can be unpredictable since markets are seasonal, and breaking into event management is challenging too. I have a full-time job, so I'm trying to figure out the best approach. I don't want to let go of my passion for art, but I see more potential for success in a joint venture with my husband.

I have a few questions:

  • How do I go about getting licensed if I pursue both of these paths?
  • Do I need to keep the businesses separate? I understand the liability aspect, but I'm unsure about setting up separate entities.
  • Is this a wise decision? I love creating art and don't see it as a burden, but I want to make sure this is a viable idea and not a recipe for failure.

I'm not planning on leaving my current job, but I'd love to hear from others who have attempted what I'm aiming for, whether they succeeded or not.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I could really use some guidance on the next steps to take!
