Is there something going on with water quality in the bay?

Discussion

Wondering if there are any marine bio/ecology or something in here who might know.. or maybe this is all normal and I’ve just been lucky to never experience it in the past??

Marine Park is my favorite place to tidepool, specifically under the railroad bridge & at the little pond back there. I’ve been doing it for years and have ALWAYS seen a huge number of hermit crabs and shrimp in that pond. Went yesterday and saw only a handful of hermit crabs and zero shrimp. I’ve never not seen shrimp there so this was super weird to me. It also seemed like the water in the pond was much clearer than usual… maybe there’s been a die-off cuz there aren’t enough nutrients in the water now? I don’t think it’s a matter of seasonality because I’ve gone in all seasons (but more often in spring/summer) and always seen them there.

Then we went down to Larrabee and saw a large number of hooded nudibranchs, which would have been very exciting if not for the fact that all but one appeared to be extremely dead! It was actually a huge bummer and made me kinda concerned. I’ve only seen hooded nudis 2-3x before, only at Marine Park (in that little pond!), and had no idea Larrabee was apparently such a hot spot. I wasn’t keeping a close count, but I’d estimate that I saw about 30. Of those, some were very obviously dead (flesh was visibly damaged, missing, and/or discolored), while others appeared normal but upon closer inspection, did not move at all. Only one that I found was actively moving at all, and it seemed kind of slow/lethargic, like maybe it wasn’t doing well??

It made me wonder if there is something going on with the water… is there a pollutant or contaminant in the bay that could be causing this? Is there a toxic algae bloom? Do hooded nudibranchs just die en masse around this time of year?

Maybe the lack of hermits/shrimps and the dead nudis is just a sad coincidence, but I couldn’t help think it may be related, and that the water may have something to do with it.

Thoughts?
