Looking into getting a puppy but have a question

My husband and I are looking into getting a puppy. We are doing research before just jumping in. My husband wants to get a puppy and potty train it ourselves (and name it what we want). Because then it'll become easier to train them once they are potty trained. They be use to you and be able to listen to new commands. But we work 8 hour jobs Mon-Fri. And won't have the time for potty training. So I said get a puppy that's potty trained and then we can do other commands with it like sit, stay, leave it, etc. But he says it'll be hard to get the puppy to listen because we didn't do the potty training so it'll be used to the people that did it from the beginning. But I dont think thats 100% true. Am i wrong?
