What is the point of clans?

Like really, do people just team up if they are of the same clan, do they exchange guides/strategies or something like that.

With the game as it is, I don't really see the point of joining clans if you won't work together, and if you do, that is annoying to independent players.

Hopefully that new tournament thing will make clans useful, and less disruptive of the main game.
