AITAH for feeling upset over how my school is handing my autism?
I go to an alternative school program where I attend a community college to obtain credits for both college and high school. Every day in the past I’ve entered campus with an optimistic attitude, but this last day I left has left me feeling really bad.
It’s really difficult to make friends because of my autism. In early high school I would get severe social anxiety because of repeated bad social experiences. My entire body would shake, glasses fog up, voice get shaky, I’d freeze up and not be able to say anything during presentations, and I would often cry. Silently in class on really difficult days, but mostly after school. It felt even more isolating when I was sure others saw me like that, but would do nothing to help me. These circumstances pushed me to joining this alternative school program.
Through time I’ve become less trusting of the staff for the program. My guidance counselor when I first got there (0) was really nice, but she left her job. Her replacement (1) was nice at first. I told him about my autism diagnosis thinking there was confidentiality like between a high school student and counselor, but I was wrong because another staff member (2) in the program approached me in a room full of other students and started talking to me about my condition. I felt really uncomfortable that my counselor (1) outed me on my condition and that this other staff member talked about it in a full office room then weeks later again in a full classroom.
The program also has these event days during the summer that function as a day of team building exercises with other students in the program. I asked if I could skip the event day since I had already been in the program for a few semesters and hadn’t been able to make any friends, but another staff member (3) urged me to come by saying that we’d be in groups so I wouldn’t be alone, so I decided to suck it up and attend anyway. Unfortunately it played out as I expected. It was like everyone had their own clique, and the group I was assigned to wasn’t really friendly. There were go karts and mini golf. I was really exited to play mini golf actually, but a few courses in my group and the staff facilitator (4) got bored and decided to leave the course. They just said “let’s go back” and left me behind without checking in with me. I played the rest of the courses that weren’t occupied by another group then went back too. After I get back one person in my group there said he wanted to get water, was told to get water, but said he didn’t want to get water because he’d have to go alone. That honestly got me upset because the whole group straight up left me.
I was hurt. I sent a message the next day to the staff saying to excuse me from the next event day that summer because I didn’t want them to pay for an empty ticket and didn’t want to get marked down for not showing up. I end up getting forced into a meeting as the staff (2&3) said they wouldn’t schedule my next semester classes without an in person meeting where we’d talk about both scheduling and what happened during the event day. In person meetings aren’t necessary for scheduling, they just wanted me for this meeting. They also refused to talk about the event day any further online.
I say I have a 30 minute timeframe to meet and leave the same day. I sort out the scheduling then I check my phone and see it’s almost time for me to leave. I put my phone down in front me and the staff member I was meeting with (3) tells me that she knew I was recording her. I check and it turns out when I pulled out my phone my flash light had also gone off. I show her my home screen, but she doesn’t believe that I wasn’t recording and said she wanted me to unlock my phone. I wasn’t willing to do that, so she wasn’t willing to finish the meeting. As I left she told me she was disappointed because she wanted to meet with me but “guess not.” It was like she was trying to guilt me. Then as I left the office the front desk lady (5) told me goodbye in this sad tone like she pities me. I swear she does this every time I leave the office in a sad mood. I know other people see me sad, but no one ever tries to console me or give me advice to be stronger and that bothers me. I send a message to the staff saying I won’t be attending the next event day and apologize, but I didn’t get a response.
Just recently I looked online at the program’s social media (Ran by 6) and saw this photo of me uploaded when I was in a room among a few other students. I contacted the staff stating that I shouldn’t be on their social media because I signed a model release form refusing to allow them to upload any pictures or videos of me. I saw that they removed the photos, but they never left a reply confirming or apologizing. I feel like since I left the last meeting, our communication has been passive aggressive.
I know my body language often times gives off mixed signals and that bad experiences and loneliness have made me desperate, but I want to improve so that I can make a friend. All of the faculty say that I’m “doing perfect” or I’m “perfect just the way I am”, but I don’t have any friends and that’s how I know something is wrong. I’m still pretty bothered from the last event day.
Is my school wrong here? Am I doing the right thing?
TLDR I have autism that makes friendship difficult and my school had an event day at a golf course where I was left behind then ignored when expressing distress over it.
