Clair Obscure: Expedition 33 contains many Masonic symbols.

Spoiler

After some time playing and researching, I’ve come to recognize a few key elements:

  • Right from the title, you can see that 33 is a number of special significance to Freemasonry. Additionally, Clair Obscure refers to the artistic technique of light and shadow, which also reflects the philosophy of the order.
  • Next, we have the Pictos symbols, which are related to shapes like squares, triangles, and rectangles - strongly resembling rulers and compasses, key tools and symbols of Masonry.
  • Furthermore, the number of floors in the Endless Tower is 11, another number with Masonic significance.
  • Sciel’s abilities involve the moon and the sun, which are also symbolic elements commonly found in Masonic iconography.
  • The name Esquire in the game carries the meaning of a rank within Freemasonry. It originates from the Old French word “escuyer,” which means "shield-bearer" for a knight (squire). An Esquire is someone in training - an apprentice on the path to becoming a knight.
  • The game mentions a conflict between the Painters and the Writers. While it’s unclear whether any Painter was a Freemason, many Writers certainly were - Victor Hugo being a clear example.

That’s everything I’ve discovered so far. I’ll continue updating this analysis as I uncover more details.
Thanks for reading.
