AITA for selling my roommate’s couch, pocketing the money, and telling everyone she’s a walking red flag?

I (26F) used to be best friends with a woman I’ll call Helga (26F). In high school we hated each other, then randomly got close when we were stuck in the same three-period class. I should’ve trusted my gut.

Years later, Helga got divorced and asked if she could move in with me when I relocated for work. I agreed because I genuinely thought she’d changed. I paid extra rent for her for a few months, bought groceries, covered the light bill — basically funded her new “independent” life while she complained about the job I even helped her get.

Instead of saving money or spending time with her kids, she’d turn every weekend into a bar crawl or claim she was seeing her babies — but really she’d be tailgating with random guys. Anytime I pointed it out, she’d twist it around like I was just “judging her.”

She also completely disrespected my other friends. My friend Lilly once let Helga crash at her place when Helga claimed she was visiting her kids — but instead Helga got drunk, passed out, locked Lilly out of her own apartment for hours, and broke her couch. I still feel bad I ever connected them.

And then there’s my dating life. Helga ended up hooking up with FIVE guys I’d dated — one I was genuinely heartbroken over. She knew it, slid into his DMs anyway, and laughed it off when I said it hurt.

The final straw was when she locked me out of our apartment. My car got towed while stranded waiting for her. She refused to help pay for it, saying “that’s not my fault.” A few months later, she bailed on our lease, left her mess for me to deal with, trashed the place, blocked me on everything, and kept our entire $800 deposit. She even tried to blame my cat for “peeing on everything,” which was ridiculous — my cat mostly stayed at my boyfriend’s and never left my room when she was home anyway.

I followed the law for abandoned stuff — I have receipts, photos, everything. I know I’d win if I bothered with small claims court, but she’s not worth the time. So instead, I boxed her junk up, deep-cleaned the apartment, sold her abandoned couch for $800 cause it was in great condition (her boyfriend was just too lazy to move it) and told our mutual friends exactly who she is so she can’t do this again.

Lilly and I are still good, my spine’s intact, my cat’s innocent, and my bank account survived. Some people say I was petty for selling her stuff and exposing her instead of just moving on — but honestly, after everything, I feel like I just evened the score.

AITA for selling her couch, keeping the money, and warning everyone she’s a walking red flag so no one else gets used?
