Is having a favorite parent “just a phase”?
My daughter is almost 15 months old. I took about 5 months off for maternity leave when she was born, and around 3 months we noticed a strong preference for her dad. She would cry and even refuse to eat at times, and along comes dad and she settled down immediately. We thought maybe it was because I spent all day with her while he worked. When I went back to work, he took 10 weeks off for his paternity leave but she loved every second of being home with dad all day. I’d get home from work and she wouldn’t want much to do with me. Almost a year later, it’s even worse. She cries and screams when he isn’t home or if he’s outside doing yard work. When he’s cooking, she’s standing at the baby gate screaming because she’s too far away from him. We took a couple days away and left her with grandparents for the weekend, and when we got back she crawled right to him and when I came near she simply smacked me square in the face and turned away. She is constantly rejecting me and fighting me. I love her so much and this breaks my heart. Everyone keeps telling me it’s just a phase but it’s been almost a year. I don’t know what to do. I’m wondering if it’s because I’m the “mean” one who trims her nails, cleans her boogers, combs her hair, you know stuff like that. My husband is still there helping, but he’s holding her still. But surely that can’t be enough to make her hate me?
