What do you do with old photos and stuff after divorce?

Life After Divorce

I was with my ex-husband for 12 years, married 7. Much of the relationship was good, before it went downhill and ended in divorce several years ago. We have not spoken since then and we have both moved on. I got rid of pretty much everything that reminded me of my ex, except a bunch of photos from our early years, our wedding pictures, pets we had together, etc. I have always been big on pictures because I had a hard childhood and have almost no pictures of my childhood or my parents who both passed away when I was young, so I tend to take a LOT of pictures and cherish them for the memories.

My conundrum is that I keep the pictures from my first marriage put away where I don't see them unless I dig out those boxes, because I don't want to look back on them and think about my "past life" when I gave my youth and some of my best years to someone who is not my husband anymore and who hurt me deeply. But part of me has a tiny little fear that if I throw all of it away, I might regret it in the future... not because of my ex, but because I would have nothing to show for a very large portion of my life. Like, I want to toss it... but that was also part of my life and what made me who I am. But I feel weird about keeping it around, now that I am remarried and we are starting a family. (My current husband is unbothered by it and is very sympathetic and understanding.)

I have no love or interest left in my first husband; I refuse to even speak his name. I just feel like if I throw away everything, I will have nothing to show for such a large portion of my life and young adult years.

Those of you who spent YEARS with your ex-spouse then moved on to find true happiness, what did you do with all of the reminders of the past, especially pictures?
