Best food buildings *before* Field Kitchen

So I'm not that experienced in the game, just did P1 and got all needs fulfilled simultaneously except fox housing (was just a couple dozen bread short before starting that game, oof).

That being said, here's my current opinion on food buildings:

S-tier:

  • Beanery. Porridge simply requires way less resources to make than other foods, and the Beanery is the best porridge building, as it also includes a recipe for Crystalized Dew which can combo for tool creation. The Beanery also rocks for Foxes specifically with the other food being Pickled Goods.

  • Pantry: Porridge and Luxury Packs. It isn't as good at creating porridge as the Beanery, but does create luxury packs, which is quite nice, as it is one of the good options for stacking trade value. Additionally it does pie, which is typically a medicore food as it is neither great for Humans nor Frogs (nor lizards), however the Pantry does two foods for both species in a single building, which is great for stacking met needs. Additionally with Humans+Frogs+Lizards, pie becomes quite worthwhile.

A-tier:

  • Press. Paste from the press is in my opinion much better than Jerky from the Kiln. Not only is the recipe a similar expense, but it is a better food for pumping resolve. That being said, I don't actually like synthesizing coal that much, so maybe others will say that I'm crazy. 3-star oil is one of those recipes that is much better than 2-star oil. Paste is a food that rises and falls with meat production and Harpies (and to a lesser extent, Frogs), it is superior to their other food option (jerky), but can come online later since you need dye.

  • Smokehouse: Incense for trade value, 3-star jerky. Pretty fantastic, as jerky isn't isn't that expensive of a food. The species that eat jerky don't use incense in their culture though.

B-tier:

  • Kiln: If you like turning wood into coal, this is a good source of jerky on the side. Even though I'm not a massive fan of this approach, it is a strong approach.

  • Grill: Great skewer recipe, and also gives a good recipe for Paste. Harpy+Foxes lets go. Also does the tool synergy thing as a side option (1-star copper bars). Skewers are actually a rather cheap meat food, but there isn't a lot of synergy in the buildings that produce it. This is one of them.

  • Brick Oven: Incense for trade value, 3-star biscuits. Pretty nice, but biscuits aren't a great type of food.

  • Cookhouse: Porridge+skewers makes for a very versatile food building. It only does food though. A porridge building can never be bad. The cookhouse also does Biscuits.

C-tier:

  • Smelter: Pie (albiet a poor recipe), and Training Gear for trade value, possible tool synergy also (copper processing). With Humans+Frogs+Lizards, the Smelter does so many awesome things, even if the recipe for pie is poor.

  • Butcher: Oil and skewers, or even jerky in a pinch. It feels to me this building is atrociously common, particularly before gaining levels. It isn't an awful building though.

  • Distillery: My other pick for pickled goods. It does incense for trade value, and ale if need be. It isn't terrible, but pickled goods are rather expensive.

I feel all other food buildings are much more situational -- they can be good -- but I feel these ones are always useful if you want one of the types of food produced in them (I've never played anywhere close to P12 where running services is more difficult). I should reiterate that I haven't been playing for ultra long, so I could be massively sleeping on something or just fundamentally wrong somehow.
