VHS collecting questions
Hi, all. I have a question or two about the VHS collecting scene.
I grew up in the 80s and 90s. I had VCRs and VHS collections back in the day. I actually still have a few tapes and a VCR around. I remember the first one I ever saw. It was on Christmas morning when my folks got our first VCR. We watched Gremlins. So, I get if it’s mostly a nostalgia thing.
I don’t mean to judge or anything. Just genuinely curious.
Like, I can see it in preserving lost media, OAR of local broadcasts and such. I know some films never made it to DVD and it’s still the only way to acquire them.
But tape degrades and seems like a poor way to watch stuff that’s currently available in a modern format.
Do people generally watch on an old CRT to get that “feel” of how they watched stuff when they were younger?
Is it just a collecting thing more than buying them to watch them?
I am similarly confused about the audio cassette collecting scene. I get Vinyl has some advantages, but, to me, cassettes kinda sounded like shit back in the day but they were a hell of a lot more convenient.
To digress, In the late 90s had this piece of shit 1989 Cutless Sierra that would eat tapes like it was popping tic tacs. I changed the deck out and it still ate them. Anyway, I got a CD player and never looked back, though they kinda sucked too as car cd players were bad to scratch them.
Anyway, I just find the hobby kind of interesting and am just curious what attracts you to it.
