Preply’s 50% trial discount makes tutors look shady — I just lost a student 😤

I just had a really solid trial class with a lovely student. We had a great connection, she was excited, even asked about future scheduling.

Then she messaged me afterward saying she thought my rate was $14/hour, and that $28 was more than she planned to spend for long-term lessons. She was kind and respectful — but totally caught off guard by the actual price.

Why? Because Preply gave her the 50% discount for the trial class… and didn’t clearly explain it was just for that first session. So she assumed that was my real rate. And now it feels like I “raised” my price, when I didn’t change a thing. 😤

I get that Preply wants to attract new students, but this bait-and-switch dynamic ends up making tutors look dishonest, even when we’re doing everything right.

Anyone else had this happen? How do you handle price transparency with new students when Preply messes with the numbers?
