Loyalty bonus

I just received the loyalty bonus from Q for 8000 points or 50 status credits. I have a habit of overcooking my status credits for platinum (but well short of platinum one). There are 7 months until the end of my membership year. How long can I wait before choosing which loyalty bonus I receive? Does it automatically select the points or something after a few months or completely expire?
