Portals - one time use since when?

I'm a long time player, and I'm used to portals remaining activated for long periods once activated, but not any longer. Every time I use a portal now it needs to be activated - a real PITA, and the audio drives my gf crazy when she's in the room 😅

So my question is - is this a thing now, and since when? I ask because it seemed gradual to me. It started with one of my PS4 saves, and spread to the other. It's one of the reasons I bought a PS5. But now it's affected all my PS5 saves. This all seemed to start around Nov. 2024. Was this in an update?
