Is it wrong to choose a place closer to me to hang out?

I(23f) live in the outskirts of the city and although the bus and metro transportation system is great in my city, it can be limited to a few areas and be a hassle. My friend(21f) lives on the other side of the same city. We usually hang out at a somewhat mid point between our two homes.

This place is bus ride of 30 minutes to take me to the nearest metro station, which then takes me a metro ride of around 45 minutes. My friend chooses to opt for private transportation (cabs, autos) because she doesn’t feel safe using public transportation.

Recently my friend has been dying to go to this restaurant but the problem is that it has only opened in three locations. One location is completely out of the city, the other is closer to her but would take more than a 2 hour commute from my house while the third place would be around an hour commute from my place.

I expressed how it probably wouldn’t work with the travel but she insisted on going. When I said I could not handle a two hour commute to the second location as my parents would worry if I got home too late, she offered to come to the third location which I was extremely grateful for.

Because my friend doesn’t use public transportation and instead uses cabs and autos, it does shorten the time to reach home and back considerably. Of course, it is important to note that she too comes from a great distance. It would take her around 40 minutes to reach our mid point hangout location.

The restaurant location closer to me would take me 30 minutes for the bus ride to the metro and around 25 minutes to reach the restaurant.

I also want to say that my friend is very sheltered. She doesn’t speak the local language and is unaware of how the transportation system works.

The restaurant location is one of the metro stops on my way to our mid point hangout location which obviously meant it was closer to me. My friend told me that since she didn’t know how to use the metro, I would need to go all the way to our mid point location, pick her up and take her to the restaurant. After that, I would then have to drop her back to the mid point location before finally going home. I don’t know how much time this would’ve taken but I know it would’ve been a lot considering the back and forth. To me, it felt very impractical because the metro in our city is very simple to operate and she didn’t need to worry about the local language as everything is written in English.

I still agreed thinking if I taught her how to navigate the metro it would allow us to explore the places I usually go to with my other friends.

When I reached the mid point location to pick her up, she told me that her mother thought that my friend was always pandering to me while I did nothing notable to come see her. It kind of broke my heart considering that I was willing to go back and forth just to pick her up and drop her back safely. Her mother also said I’m always picking places that are convenient for me and not for my friend(i.e the mid point location). I didn’t know what to say because the metro ride to get to the mid point location for me is be around 16 stops. It’s not exactly a convenient place for me.

Her mother also knew about every single detail of our plan, including my back and forth, because she is very protective and my friend hates lying to her mother.

It hurt me so much that I told her to just pick whichever restaurant she thought was closer to her home because it wasn’t even worth the hassle at that point. We ate and had a lot of fun but while I was coming back home alone, I just kept thinking of where I went wrong. I’ve always found it difficult to put myself in other people’s shoes so I wanted some opinions.
